The paintings, as a whole, reveal to the visitor a visual narrative of great moments of the Revolution and the rest of the 19th century.

The Benaki Museum and the Anthony E. Comninos Foundation present the exhibition “Treasures of Philhellenic Art” with works from the important collection of the Foundation that are exhibited for the first time.

The collection of philhellenic art of the Anthony E. Comninos Foundation includes high-quality paintings that have been created by leading representatives of the European philhellenic art movement.

The exhibition features works by painters from Italy such as Ludovico Lipparini, Filippo Agricola, Francesco Podesti and Cesare Dell Acqua, from Germany such as Peter H.L. von Hess, Johann G.C. Perlberg and Carl A.J. Rottmann, from France, such as Alexandre-Marie Colin, Antoine-Alphonse Montfort and Pierre Bonirote, from England, such as Denis Dighton, Charles Eastlake, Edward Lear, Hugh W. Williams and George P. Reinagle, but also Greeks, who transformed European philhellenic standards.

The paintings, as a whole, reveal to the visitor a visual narrative of great moments of the Revolution. At the same time, a series of landscape paintings bring to life the Greek landscape of the 19th century. Through fascinating scenes of heroism, self-sacrifice and patriotism, the exhibition encourages visitors to reflect on elements of recent history that have shaped Greek national identity.

The exhibition is accompanied by an illustrated catalogue.
