The first steps of the company were led by Andreas Michalis in the early 1970s, while in 1978 the company was registered as University Studio Press. Today it is run by the founder’s children, Froso Michalis and Leonidas Michalis, and has three stores that house its books, two in Thessaloniki and one in Athens.

The company’s path has been upward, managing over the years of its presence to be in the top ten of the publishers with the largest book production per year. University Studio Press remains consistent with its original goal of contributing to scientific knowledge and publishes scientific textbooks covering a variety of fields: medicine, history, literature-studies, psychology, architecture, art, archaeology, pedagogy, sports, theatre, philosophy, theology, geotechnical sciences, natural sciences, dictionaries, etc.

In the field of highly demanding publications such as dictionaries, the company has several titles, the most recent being the Modern Latin- Greek Dictionary, a 1,768-page, 70,000-entry edition. This monumental work, the result of years of concerted effort by a specialized team of collaborators, was awarded by the Academy of Athens at an event in October 2021. The publishing production of art books, scrapbooks and essays is also significant, while books on the city of Thessaloniki, its history, past and present, as well as on the wider Balkan region, are among the house’s favorite series.

In addition to books written by acclaimed Greek academics, the publishing house has for many years undertaken the publication of scientific works, yearbooks, publications and journals of institutions and entities of the city of Thessaloniki and Athens (Archaeological Museum of Thessaloniki, AIMOS, European Centre for Byzantine and Post-Byzantine Monuments, Archaeological Society of Athens, Ephorates of Antiquities, etc.). Periodical publications of medical associations and societies of Thessaloniki as well as other scientific disciplines are also part of the company’s publishing production. In terms of translations, the company cooperates with well-known foreign publishers of scientific books, bringing to the Greek readership important titles and authors (P. Grimal, F. Montanari, G. Kirk, S. Hornblower, G. Grass, M. Heidegger, R. Arnheim, A. Rossi, W. Hoepfner, T. Hoelscher, Ch. Wolf, G. Leopardi, J.- P. Sartre, S. Kane, P. de Marivaux, etc.).

With a sense of responsibility towards the delicate field of books, the company’s primary concern is quality. For this reason, the selection of titles is based on strict criteria and the publications are characterized by aesthetics and modern design. Each project is completed in our in-house design, printing and binding facilities. Years of experience in the field of scientific books is reflected in their quality and is shown by the trust of the partners who choose them.
