The depiction of heroes and historical events of 1821 in folk art contributed decisively to the formation of modern Greek identity and culture.

The exhibition “The ’21 of the Collectors” is presented at the same time as the exhibition “Leonidas-Napoleon-Botsaris. The language of symbols“,  organized by the Teloglion Foundation in the context of celebrating the 200th anniversary of the Greek Revolution.

Many collectibles are crucial for the depiction of persons and events of the Revolution: paintings, plates, clocks, porcelain, etc. with topics related to Napoleon, Ali Pasha, Botsaris, Delacroix, etc. The exhibits bring back the ‘atmosphere’ of the events and their impact on the public of the time, by multiplying, expanding and enriching the image of the symbols in common themes, and connecting the narratives that emerge from the two exhibitions.

Philhellenic objects were becoming quite popular in the middle class, which made possible their mass production. In addition, the depiction of heroes and historical events of 1821 in folk art contributed decisively to the formation of modern Greek identity and culture.

The exhibition is held in collaboration with the Benaki Museum, and in particular with George Magginis, Scientific Director, who provided the material for the preparation of the exhibition, as well as Mara Verykokou, curator of the exhibition.
