The program of events held in celebration of the bicentennial of the Greek Revolution, in the framework of “Initiative 1821-2021”

Opera “Androniki” by Alexandros Greck | Sunday 28 November 2021, 20.00

“Androniki” is the first opera by the Corfiot composer Alexander Greck (1876-1959) and was completed in 1905. The libretto was written, in close collaboration with the composer, by the poet and writer A. Vranas, based on the historical novel by Stefanos Xenos The Heroine of the Greek Revolution, i.e. scenes in Greece from 1821-1827. The handwritten manuscript was found in 2014 in the Archive of the Athens Conservatory. However, the orchestrated score was never identified. The opera will be presented with a new orchestration by the conductor and composer Nikos Athinaios at the Olympia Municipal Music Theater Maria Callas.

Symposium: Music in modern Greece | November 24, 2021

This symposium is the first in a series of events celebrating the Athens Conservatory’s 150 years of contributing both in the music education and the cultural life of modern Greece in general.
The symposium was organized mainly due to:
A. the publication of the collective volume Music, Language and Identity in Greece: Defining an Art Music in the 19th and 20th centuries (Routledge 2020, paperback 2021), as well as the publication of the accompanying CD entitled ” HARMONY “, with rare works by Greek composers from the Archive of the Athens Conservatory
B. the revival and production (in a concert) of the opera Androniki by the Corfiot composer Alexandros Greck, which was considered lost until 2014.

The competition is organized by the Onassis Foundation and the Onassis Library in collaboration with EELLAK, PostScriptum and the General State Archives, with the support of the National Documentation Center and under the auspices of the Ministry of Education and Religious Affairs. “Müller of the Greeks”: German Musical Philhellenism | November 4, 2021

The B. & M. Theocharakis Foundation for the Fine Arts and Music organizes a concert dedicated to German musical philhellenism. Acclaimed German lyric poet Wilhelm Müller is mostly known for his poems that Franz Schubert set to music in his song cycles Die Schöne Müllerin (The Lovely Miller-Girl) and Winterreise (Winter Journey). His ardent philhellenism made him known as “Müller of the Greeks.” More information here.

The German philhellenisms – International Conference & Concert | 3 to 6 November 2021

The Center for Modern Hellenism (CeMoG) of FU-Berlin in collaboration with the Institute for the Study of Greek-German Relations of NKUA organizes an international conference in Berlin on the “German philhellenisms”. The conference is part of the activities organized abroad with the support of the Aikaterini Laskaridis Foundation, and aims to explore different intersecting fields between Greece and Germany within the theme we are used to perceiving as a single German philhellenism (or lack thereof).
