The Institute of Contemporary Greek Art/ISET, a branch of the National Gallery – Alexandros Soutsos Museum, in the framework of the parallel programme of the thematic exhibition “DEMOCRACY” presented in the main building of the National Gallery -, organizes from 29 October 2024 to 10 January 2025 a poster exhibition, in collaboration with the Archives of Contemporary Social History (ASKI).

The archival exhibition entitled “Democracy on the Road. Poster Exhibition 1967-1981” will be held at the exhibition space of the ISET (Valaoritou 9α, Αθήνα) and the admission for the general audience will be free. The selected posters from the ASKI, the ISET and other institutions and collections tell stories from an exciting period. The anti-dictatorial posters with their open call for solidarity with the Greek people and resistance to oppression, intersect with the demands for the rapid consolidation of democracy, punishment of the guilty and de-legitimization. Next to them, the post-coup posters with their colourful mottos demand more democracy and freedoms. The posters from the artists’ visual action form the visual representation of the democratic demand. The rare political and artistic posters are accompanied by photographic documents, unique objects from different eras and audiovisual evidence in a multi-thematic conversation about ideas, artistic expression and democracy.

The exhibition is held under the auspices of the Antonios E. Komnenos Foundation.

The exhibition will include a public programme and thematic guided tours which will be announced soon.

Duration: 29 October 2024 – 10 January 2025.
