Marble atelier on•entropy, in collaboration with curator Maria Cristina Didero (Design Miami 2022, Wallpaper), presents the project “A Future for the Past” at the 5VIE exhibition, part of the Salone del Mobile in April 2023 in Milan.

Project a Future for the Past consists of an installation of marble sculptures and aims to highlight the local art of Tinian marble craftsmanship on the world stage of design & art and its role in “Design for Good”.

The Design District 5VIE is located in the heart of Milan’s historic center and has established itself as a reference point for top design projects and collectibles. This year, with its pun theme “Design for Good”, 5VIE addresses issues of social sustainability and the true orientation of design for a common good.

So the on.entropy examines the concepts of belonging, identity, and social cohesion.

Specifically, their proposal highlights the role of marble craftsmanship and the traditions around it, in strengthening collective memory and cultural heritage in a modern and sustainable way.

The installation of A Future for the Past by on•entropy in the space of Via Cesare Correnti, 5VIE, will represent the feel of a temple and will include a cabinet of curiosities. “We chose the setting of a temple, as this building typology has historically preserved some of the most interesting collectible design items. One of them is the table.” It is an object that has evolved within the temple: it first appeared there with 1 stele, as a surface for offerings, and later evolved into the altar, a 4-legged piece of furniture (etymology: tra-PEZA[ᾰ], – i, i (pos. instead of tetra-pous, meaning tetra-four + pous- feet). The central point of the installation is thus a sculptural table.

The cabinet of curiosities features two large walls with small holes that lead to hidden shelves and create an internal wall showcase. There is a curated collection of souvenirs, objects, photographs, and videos that tell the story of the aesthetic evolution of marble sculpture and reflect the essence of the island’s heritage: from its natural beauty to the cultural evolution of civilization through religion and the sea—elements that shaped social changes through time.

This exhibition will serve as a precursor to the upcoming major exhibition, which will take place in Tinos in the spring of next year with the support of the Benaki Museum. In collaboration with Tinian marble sculptors, including Nikos Fortoma, Argyris Skalkotos, and Dimitris Mavromaras, the on.entropy will create a celebration for the cultural heritage of Tinian marble craftsmanship. Such a synergy in the field of design, local and international, traditional and contemporary, is an innovation and aims to ensure the future of both: collectible design and traditional marble sculpture.

“For us, design is not just about a beautiful and comfortable chair, but about generations of people and the set of knowledge it takes to create something. Their connection with matter and their interactions with each other are the essence of craftsmanship. These are often taken for granted or overlooked, and should be brought up, especially in a rapidly changing era.”
