As part of the educational activities of the Nisyros Geopark, the Climatology and Atmospheric Environment Laboratory of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens organized the 2nd NISYROS SUMMER SCHOOL, which was successfully held in the emblematic building of the Old Primary School in Emporio of Nisyros, from May 28 to June 4, 2023.

The Summer School takes place in the historical building of the Old Primary School in Emporio of Nisyros, which has been granted by the Municipality of Nisyros to the Laboratory of Climatology and Atmospheric Environment of the Department of Geology and Geoenvironment of NKUA and to the UNESCO Con-E-Ect Chair of the present Interinstitutional Program.

The Summer School which is an institution on the island of Nisyros, brings together scientists from different disciplines of Physics, Geology, Forestry, Ecology, Natural Environment, Meteorology and Climatology, who will carry out a variety of lectures and field exercises on the island of Nisyros which is considered a natural science laboratory.

In the context of the educational activities of the Nisyros Geopark, the postgraduate students who participate in the Summer School, complete the theoretical course and carry out field work, such as laboratory exercises, concerning micro-bioclimatic measurements in various locations in Nisyros, dendrochronologies to reconstruct the climate of Nisyros the previous 200 years, measurements of air quality and environmental measurements at the volcano of Nisyros and chronological geological evolution of the active volcano of Nisyros.
