The End of the War” focuses on the key turning points of this pivotal year, which served as a catalyst in the historical course of humanity.
Within twelve months, the world was confronted with the revelation of the absolute barbarity of Nazism and the devastation it had wrought, but at the same time experienced the joy of the victory of free nations. Through photographic material that has never been presented in Greece before, as well as original documents from Greece and abroad, a narrative is composed that allows visitors to grasp both the density of events as well as their significance for the future. The liberation of the concentration camps, the invasion of Germany and the capture of Berlin, Hitler’s suicide, Germany’s surrender, the Pacific War, the Allied meetings in Yalta and Potsdam, the dropping of the atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, the creation of the UN, and the Nuremberg trials are some of the sections of the exhibition. Through his “tour” of these sections, visitors will be confronted with the devastation but will also sense the hope at the dawn of a new era. It is precisely this dual dimension of the momentous events of 1945 that makes this year pivotal and extremely interesting, both then and now. In an era of widespread anxiety about the future, understanding the conditions faced by humanity a few generations before ours becomes even more necessary.
During the exhibition, educational experiential programs will be organized for middle and high school students, as well as parallel events.
