Description

The Interdisciplinary Programme of Postgraduate Studies (I.P.P.S.) “Water, Biosphere and Climate Change” (Government Gazette 3019/9-7-2021 vol. B), is considered an innovative and unique program of its kind at a global level, since it is the only one that approaches the issue of water as a natural resource on earth in a holistic way, regardless of whether it is in excess, sufficiency or scarcity.

This MSc is offered by the Department of Geology and Geoenvironment of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (NKUA), by the Department of Forestry and Natural Environment of the International University of Greece (IHU) and by the UNESCO Chair on the Conservation and Ecotourism of Riparian and DeltaicEcosystem (Con-E-Ect).

The objective of this Master’s programme is to provide knowledge on the interaction between humans, living organisms, abiotic factors and water from an ecological, technical, political-economic and biological point of view, under conditions of ever-increasing climate change. An additional objective is to conduct research on the above-mentioned interactions. As such, it is addressed to scientists, researchers, educators and executives of companies and enterprises dealing with water and its interaction with the biosphere, always from the perspective of climate change.

The MSc in Water, Biosphere and Climate Change grands a Diploma of Postgraduate Studies (MSc) with the following specialisations:

  1. Water in scarcity situations.
  2. Water in excess situations.

The degrees are granted by the Department of Geology and Geoenvironment of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens. A total of ninety (90) credits (ECTS) are required for the granting of the Diploma of Postgraduate Studies, with teaching being done through in-person or teleconference courses and lectures.

Following the recent decision of the Municipal Council of the Municipality of Nisyros, which granted the Laboratory of Climatology and Atmospheric Environment of the Department of Geology and Geoenvironment of the University of Athens and the UNESCO Con-E-Ect Chair, the building of the old Τrade Municipal School for Educational and Research purposes, has been included in the official course program of the Postgraduate School, and a Summer School of one (1) week duration. The Summer School will take place every year after the end of the courses and examinations of the Spring Semester of the MSc, i.e. during the first ten days of June, in Nisyros. It will include mainly laboratory exercises and field courses related to the theoretical courses.
