Description

The Postgraduate Programme in APPLIED BIOCHEMISTRY started operating for first time in 1994 with the aim to meet the needs for deep Biochemical Education in Greece under the title “Applied Biochemistry – Biotechnology”. In 2011, where three Departments related to Biochemistry have been funded in Greece in graduate level, the Programme was titled “Applied Biochemistry: Clinical Chemistry, Biotechnology, Evaluation of Pharmaceutical Products” to indicate in detail the level of knowledge of post-graduates. In 2018 the program was re-launched in the form of a Joint Postgraduate Programme in collaboration of the Department of Chemistry of the University of Patras and of the Institute of Biosciences and Applications of NCSR “Demokritos”.

The Programme has as its subject-matter Biochemistry and its applications, covering this subject both in its theoretical dimension and in its practice.

The main objectives of the programme are:

  1. the education on advanced topics of biochemistry and their applications as well as modern quantitative and qualitative methods of biological samples analysis, familiarity with the use of modern technologies, promotion of scientific excellence and research, cultivation, and development of leadership capabilities,
  2. the widening and promotion of theoretical and applied knowledge in the individual objects of the Programme,
  3. the investigation of problems related to human, animal, or plant pathological conditions,
  4. the development of scientists able to undertake PhD studies in relevant scientific areas,
  5. the creation of executives with strong theoretical background and upgraded analytical skills in modern Health, Care and Sustainable Development policies capable of addressing the challenges of the modern environment,
  6. providing students with knowledge and analytical research tools that will enable them to work as professional executives in positions of increased responsibility in Health Units, Pharmaceutical Companies, Food Industries, development companies with the objective of developing and promoting new therapeutic approaches, or even the central government, regional and local authorities.

The program is designed to provide postgraduate students with the most up-to-date scientific knowledge and laboratory skills in the field of APPLIED BIOCHEMISTRY, while also developing their relevant communication and IT skills.

Therefore, the programme is a necessary resource for graduates to acquire the necessary skills for their professional rehabilitation, improving their competitiveness, and provides them with the possibilities of academic development. In this way, the improvement of the competitiveness of the Greek Scientific Potential is sought, as well as the limitation of the leakage to foreign countries of the best of the graduates of the Departments of Schools of Natural Sciences or Health Sciences, but also of other Departments of Greek Universities. The organization and development of a post-graduate programme in Biochemistry and its applications is directly related to the other Natural Sciences, as well as Technology, Medicine, and Society, and is of vital importance for the social and economic development of the country.

The Joint MSc Programme awards exclusively Master of Sciences (MSc) in «Applied Biochemistry: Clinical Chemistry, Biotechnology, Evaluation of Pharmaceutical Products».
