Description

The M.Sc. Program Digital Cultural heritage and Landscape Archaeology of the University of Cyprus is a unique postgraduate program in the Eastern Mediterranean region that offers a concrete interdisciplinary academic course platform dealing with the application of Spatial Technologies and GeoInformatics in the wider field of Digital Humanities. The program acts as an interface between cutting-edge technologies and the Humanities, exposing students to the latest spatial technological developments, providing hands-on training and skills to different instrumentation (Geophysical, topographic, drones) and software programs of Spatial Analysis, three-dimensional imaging, Geophysical measurement processing, satellite remote sensing and photogrammetry , promoting a critical and multifaceted knowledge of their application in dealing with archaeological and historical issues and initiating dialogue between different disciplines. The graduate program emphasizes the internship of students and their participation in various international field programs.

The Postgraduate Program is implemented under the auspices of the “Sylvia Ioannou” Foundation.

Structure

The postgraduate programme in Digital Heritage and Landscape Archaeology can be completed in a minimum of three semesters. Successful completion is predicated on the acquisition of 90 ECTS, as follows:

1st semester (30 ECTS). Two compulsory and one elective courses

2nd semester (30 ECTS). Three compulsory courses

3rd Semester (30 ECTS). One course on Practical Training in Field Archaeology (10 ECTS) or an elective course (10 ECTS).

In order to complete the remaining 20 ECTS, students will need to complete a M.Sc. thesis (12,000-15,000 words) (20 ECTS).

For each course, valued at 10 ECTS, assessment will be based on one or more of the following: regular homework assignments, midterm and/or final exams, final essays or projects.

Tuition waiver scholarships will be granted to the best candidates according to the points earned in the course of admission

Admission Criteria

  • Copies of undergraduate degrees with an average score higher than 6.5/10.
  • Certified analytical scores
  • Two letters of recommendation
  • Curriculum vitae and interest report
  • Applicants must speak English at a satisfactory level: GCE or TOEFL with a grade “B” or higher for GCE- O’ level, and 600 for TOEFL or 6.5 for IELTS (this does not apply to native speakers or holders of a degree from an English-speaking university).

Prospective students should hold a BA degree in Archaeology, History, Classics, Anthropology, or other related fields of research (History of Art, Architecture, Geography, Geology, Topography, Environmental Sciences, Biology, Physics, Chemistry, Computer Science, and Engineering) from recognized universities.

Analysis of habitation in Thessaly during the Neolithic period based on the spatial tools of Geographic Information Systems (GIS). The students of the Postgraduate Program are getting familiar with various software programs of Spatial Analysis, three-dimensional imaging, Geophysical measurement processing, satellite remote sensing and photogrammetry, gaining skills for their future careers.

Geophysical mapping of archaeological sites using the georadar. The postgraduate program emphasizes the practical training of students and their participation in various international field programs in Cyprus, Greece and elsewhere.

The teaching of the courses of the postgraduate program takes place in specially designed areas of the Information Center – Library “Stelios Ioannou”. The small number of students contributes to better educate them and communicate with the teaching staff.
