The installation of the climate change monitoring station in the University Forest of Pertouli, Trikala, has been completed.
The installation of the station was implemented by the University Forest Administration and Management Fund of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki in the University Forest of Pertouli, Trikala, in partnership with the Region of Thessaly which funded its construction.
The station for monitoring climate change consists of scientific instruments with very high precision sensors, and is now fully operational. It rovides measurements of greenhouse gas emissions such as methane and carbon dioxide, incoming and outgoing radiation, and gas exchange above the forest canopy; measurements that can lead to scientific conclusions about how that the greenhouse effect affects climate change.
With the installation of the station, the Management Fund aims at the integration of our country in the pan-European station network ICOS (Integrated Carbon Observation System), the most important greenhouse gas research infrastructure in Europe. Similar stations have been installed in all major European countries. The data collected by the station and analyzed by the competent scientific and research staff will provide a useful guide in future decision-making in combating climate change, even at policy level.
