The University of Cyprus participates in a new prestigious European programme

The University of Cyprus announces the launch of a new prestigious research project under the acronym ARENAS (Funding Agreement ID: 101094731). ARENAS, corresponding to the title, Analysis of and Responses to Extremist Narratives, is one of the three major projects that have received funding from the Horizon Europe 2021-2027 Framework Programme for Research and Innovation. This project, coordinated by the French University CY Cergy Paris, is an interdisciplinary consortium of nine universities, one NGO, two NSAs and three influencing partners.

The four-year ARENAS project will explore and highlight the extreme rhetoric that influences political and social life in Europe. The research team will examine the nature of these extreme narratives, while seeking to understand how they influence specific discourse genres, based on three thematic strands: science, gender and nation. After understanding how these rhetorics work, ARENAS intends to apply good practices to empower civil society to have tools in their toolbox to address such phenomena. In addition, recommendations will be made for policy formulation on how to prevent and eliminate extreme rhetoric in the future, in order to foster a spirit of harmonious coexistence between people across Europe.

Therefore, the overall aim of ARENAS is to characterise, measure and understand the role of extreme and extremist rhetoric and narratives, which have an impact not only on the political and social sphere but on the very individuals involved in such practices. ARENAS proposes an innovative and ambitious research programme that will make a significant contribution to bridging the gap in contemporary research. At the same time, it will make recommendations to policy makers, the media, lawyers, social inclusion professionals and educational institutions and propose solutions to counter extreme rhetoric and to develop a more inclusive and inclusive Europe of societies.

The University of Cyprus team consists of researchers from the Department of French and European Studies and the Department of Social and Political Sciences.

The consortium consists of the CY Cergy Paris Université (France), which is the lead partner, the Institute of Contemporary History (Slovenia), the Universidad Autónoma de Barcelona (Spain), the Institut de Ciències Polítiques i Socials (Spain), the University of Helsinki (Finland), CNRS (France), Heinrich Heine University Düsseldorf (Germany), Università degli studi di Genova (Italy), Creative Ideas (Latvia), Momentum Educate + Innovate (Ireland), Water On Mars (Italy), University of Cyprus (Cyprus) and Fundacio OXFAM Intermon (Spain).
