 Municipal Gallery of Patras

The Municipal Gallery of the Municipality of Patras has been operating since 1988 with the aim of “visual education and aesthetic education”.

The Gallery is housed on the ground floor of the Municipal Library, thus making the space a core of the cultural movement of Patras. The coexistence allows for greater cooperation between the two institutions and allows for more integrated, complementary actions. Through the events and exhibitions it has organized, it has achieved recognition both in Greece and abroad.

The initial collection of the Municipality included works by important Greek artists of the 19th and 20th centuries, such as Nikos Kounelakis, Andreas Kriezis, Ioannis Doukas, Georgios Samartzis, George Vakalo, Giannis Mitarakis, Spyros Vasileiou, Umberto Argyros, Antonios Sochos, Stelios Miliadis. Since 1988 and the establishment of the Gallery, works by younger artists such as Andreas Vourloumis, Dimitris Bishkinis, Agenor Asteriadis, Rallis Kopsidis, Fred Emerich have been added, Alkis Pierrakos, Vassilis Speranza, Opus Zounis, Cleopatra Diga, engravings by Vasso Katraki, Aria Komianos, Tasos Alevisos, Fotis Mastichiadis, and sculpture by Yannis Gaitis.

During the years of its operation, it has maintained stable collaborations with cultural institutions such as the National Gallery, the Benaki Museum, the Athens School of Fine Arts, the National Museum of Contemporary Art, foundations, museums and other galleries throughout the country.
At the same time, the Gallery maintains its local character by organizing retrospective honorary exhibitions of artists born in Patras, presenting their contribution to Art and Culture, and by hosting group exhibitions of young artists born, living or creating in the city, in order to promote and publicize their work. Recently, and following the needs of the period, the Gallery held the 1st online exhibition of visual artists of the Cultural Organization of the Municipality of Patras with paintings by 27 artists.

Tasteful, scientific publications complement the organisation of exhibitions. They are edited and written by Art Historians who specialise in the artists’ work and their era. The publications are bilingual, seeking to promote the Gallery’s work more dynamically. The publications are produced entirely in Patras.
In order to fulfil its objective, the Municipal Gallery organises educational programmes and guided tours by specialized staff in the Museum’s premises, aiming to bring students and citizens closer to the field of art.
