The protagonist of this book is an emblematic as well as an enigmatic, a distinguished as well as a distinct figure of Modern Greek Literature, the Heptanisian intellectual of the dawn of the 19th century, Elisabeth Moutzan-Martinengo (1801-1832). Focused on her Autobiography (1831), the present study focuses on her psycho-spiritual uniqueness as a creator by studying this major monument of modern Greek literature in the light of a special theme, that of pain and psychosomatic pathology. A theme which, identified as the central conceptual core of the work, is approached based on a parallel examination with Dido Sotiriou’s novel for young children and teenagers, The Visitors (1979).

Confinement and erotic isolation, conquest and cultivation of the spirit, emergence and metamorphosis of desire, words of passion and assertion, intertwined with diverse symptoms of a melancholic type, will constitute, in this context, only some of the aspects of the personality and work of our first female prose writer. So, what more do we learn about her by leafing through the second novel for young children of her distant intellectual companion and distinguished post-war author? The interpretive approach of Th.Niftanidou ,assistant professor of modern Greek literature at the Department of Educational Sciences and Social Work of the University of Patras, based on the examination of specially selected passages, illuminates issues of female spirituality in its function with female pathology and physicality.
