The National Library of Greece has published an elegant volume by the painter Thanasis Makris entitled “Portraits of Writers. Sketches“. In it are presented, in alphabetical order, seventy portraits of older and newer writers, both Greek and foreign.

The spiritual power of Makris’ drawings is that they do not cultivate in the viewer the illusion that the portrait is a gateway to the author’s soul. The faces remain impenetrable and enigmatic.
