The section of literary tributes starts at 9.30 in the evening on Wednesday, May 31st its own “journey” at the International Festival of Patras, with a performance that refers to Andreas Karkavitsas’ “Words of the Bow”. Through it, the life of sailors comes to the spotlight.  “The Words of the Bow” was pre-published in 1889 and is one of Andreas Karkavitsas’ best short stories.

Three short stories were chosen to be presented for the performance: “The King’s Boy”, “The Mermaid” and “The Gorgon”, the narration of which is accompanied by traditional music and songs from all over Greece. Through the skilful interweaving and the artistic “coexistence” of words and music, the longings and expectations of the people are captured, which are interwoven with the masterful imagery of Karkavitsas’ stories.

The President of the Cultural Organization Katerina Geropanayoti, referring to the section of literary tributes, notes that “in the context of the International Festival of Patras, we are opening a new thematic section concerning Literature. Literature is one of the main forms of Art. It is a particular artistic way of expressing objective reality, using fiction, images. A kind of practical spiritual perception of the world. Unlike other art forms, painting, sculpture. music, dance, which appeal directly to the senses using a material, e.g. paint, stone or some energy, such as the movement of the body, the sound of a string or a keyboard. Literature is formed into words, with language and therefore now appeals directly to the cognition. It opens up new horizons, which generously offer a concentrated experience of life, which each and every person could never, on his or her own, acquire in the course of a lifetime. It brings us in touch with our mother tongue…”.
