Hellenism is confronted with an extremely aggressive Turkey that is actively and obsessively claiming Greek islands – and not only maritime “Blue Lands”. Therefore, it is in immediate need of a new, ambitious, assertive and effective strategy that breaks through the false dilemma of “dialogue or war”. It is precisely this different strategy that this book attempts to put forward for public debate.
The exponential expansion of Turkish border revisionism, aggression and military reinforcement of its neighbour, is unfortunately downplayed through reassuring narratives, which attribute Turkish threats and claims to “internal consumption” and feed unrealistic illusions that with the current dialogue Turkey will either on its own, or under international pressure, or on the basis of international law, give up its absurd claims. Therefore, the growing threat is being obscured, as is the failure of the deterrent strategy being pursued, as it has so far in no way prevented or reduced Turkey’s revisionist demands – on the contrary, they are growing every day. The result is that a worrying ignorance of danger is being embedded in the political system and in Greek society.
Given that the strategy followed does not cancel Ankara’s claims and aggression (which is its mission), it needs to be revised or even replaced by a new approach to Greek-Turkish relations and the Cyprus problem. In this context, a critical evaluation of our course to date is attempted, but also the outline of another national strategy that combines assertiveness with prudence, leveraging “smartly” and coherently all diplomatic, European, allied and military tools of Hellenism, aiming at a nationally profitable normalization.
