GERMANOS Publications has announced that the Academy of Athens, on the recommendation of the A’ Class of Sciences, has awarded a prize to the work of Professor Emeritus Spyros Pavlidis “The Creation of the Aegean: From Poetry to Earth Sciences”. The book is a different popularized approach to the creation and evolution of the Earth, Life and especially the wider Aegean area, with its timeless cultures, through myth, philosophy, science and especially poetry, where science and poetry are not separated. Both are tools with which we can better see the complexity and beauty of our world. Earth, soil, sea and the creative evolution of a place, a people’s dialogue with the environment, the geological creation of the Aegean, following the path of “Genesis” of Elytis’ “Axion Esti”, and the approach of our great poets are the subject of this book.

Spyros Pavlidis is Professor Emeritus of Geology at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. Author of many scientific papers and books. He has served as Chairman of the Department of Geology and Dean of the Faculty of Sciences of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and President of the Hellenic Geological Society (2016-2021). He is currently President of the Board of Directors of the Aristotle Museum of Natural History of Thessaloniki and member of the Board of Directors of the Institute for the Study and Monitoring of the Volcano of Santorini.
