Children’s literature is a fundamental mechanism for fostering a culture of reading, language development, and cultural identity in children, serving as a bridge between imagination, knowledge, and social experience.

In this context, libraries emerge as critical institutions for informal education and cultural mediation, playing a decisive role in shaping future readers.

As part of three-day activities of the Infant, Toddler and First School Age Group of the Children’s Department of the University of Cyprus Library, on the occasion of World Children’s Book Day, the book exhibition “Cyprus Narrates” was held with great success, focusing on Cypriot children’s literature.

The exhibition, which was aimed at children aged 3 to 12, took place from April 2 to 5, 2026, at the Information Center – “Stelios Ioannou” Library and featured selected books highlighting the evolution of Cypriot children’s and young adult literature, as well as the contribution of authors to the shaping of cultural identity. Of particular historical interest was the section of the exhibition that featured part of a rare collection of documents from Cyprus’s publishing and literary heritage.

The central theme of the exhibition was to highlight the book as a fundamental vehicle for knowledge, imagination, and culture, as well as a valuable tool for fostering values, enhancing creative and critical thinking, and deepening children’s relationship with reading. The fairy tales featured in the exhibition, works by distinguished Cypriot authors, covered a wide range of themes, such as emotions, nature, values, daily life, and human relationships.

As part of the exhibition, the public visited the Library and explored the Children’s Department, taking advantage of the opportunity for a comprehensive experience of reading and cultural discovery, journeying through the magical world of fairy tales, where imagination and knowledge meet.

This initiative is part of a broader effort to promote reading and highlight Cypriot literature, as well as the Children’s Department’s vision of fostering a love of books, knowledge, and creative expression.

The exhibition was organized under the guidance of Ms. Nasia Charalambous, the scientific director of the Department of Infancy, Preschool, and School-Age Children. The exhibition was curated by Ms. Stalo Nikolaou and Mr. Stavros X. Petrou, while the following colleagues contributed to its implementation: Charalambos Konstantinou, Nikolas Lianidis, Angeliki Spandonidou, Marios Olympios, and Andreas Fotiou.

The University of Cyprus Library, and in particular its Children’s Section, has emerged as a key institution for informal learning and cultural mediation, making a substantial contribution to shaping children’s reading identity. Through targeted initiatives, children’s familiarity with the works of Cypriot authors is enhanced, as is their understanding of local literary production as a vehicle for cultural memory and identity. At the same time, the Library space is redefined as a dynamic learning environment that promotes a love of reading, fosters creative and critical thinking, and supports the holistic cognitive and emotional development of children, laying the groundwork for the formation of active and informed citizens of tomorrow.
