Ms. Sofia Eliza Bouratsi has been appointed Artistic Director of the Experimental Arts Center of the Thessaloniki Metropolitan Organization of Visual Arts Museums (MOMUS) for a five-year term, pursuant to the relevant Government Gazette (1638/Y.O.D.D./10/15/2026), following the completion of the international call for expressions of interest for this position and the decision of the Organization’s Board of Directors.

Sofia Eliza Bouratsi has a multifaceted and multidimensional professional and research career in the field of contemporary art. Holding a Ph.D. in Aesthetics and Art Sciences from the University of Paris I – Panthéon-Sorbonne (2015), she has combined academic research and teaching (Université du Québec à Montréal, Université Paris I, the journal Prétentaine) with independent curation of exhibitions at museums and art centers (in Greece, Luxembourg, Germany, and the United States), as well as her role as a cultural policy advisor, with experience at both UNESCO and the Luxembourg Ministry of Culture, where she participated in drafting the national Cultural Development Plan for 2018–2028. Since 2023, she has worked as a curator at the National Gallery – Alexandros Soutsos Museum, where, in addition to curating Rena Papaspyrou’s exhibition “Surfaces, Instructions for Use” (2024)—which inaugurated the “Intermediate Space”—she conducted research on the history of Greek art from the post-dictatorship era onward, while simultaneously gaining substantial administrative and development experience within the framework of a major national cultural institution.

Her body of work includes an extensive corpus of international publications, including texts in exhibition catalogs, scholarly articles, and edited volumes. A distinctive feature of her curatorial approach is her ability to create unexpected encounters between institutions, organizations, works of art, people, and social groups that under other circumstances would never intersect, thereby activating art as a vibrant, inclusive, and poetic common ground. Born in Luxembourg, with a strong European identity but also a deep, lived connection to Thessaloniki, her hometown, Sophia Eliza Bouratsi brings to MOMUS—Experimental Arts Center a vision of artistic experimentation, openness, and international networking.
