The Municipal Art Gallery of Larissa – Museum G. I. Katsigra, a cultural institution with a special contribution to the cultural events of the country, aiming to continue its long-standing contribution to the field of Culture and especially the Visual Arts, revives the Biennale of the Graduates of the Fine Arts Schools of Greece, in Larissa, on December 2, with a duration until 31/12/2023.

The four participating schools are the Athens School of Fine Arts, the School of Fine Arts of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, the School of Fine Arts of the University of Ioannina and the School of Fine Arts of the University of Western Macedonia in Florina.

The Municipal Gallery of Larissa – Museum G. I. Katsigra, showing particular sensitivity to young creators, takes the initiative together with the Art Schools to organize the above institution as a practical gesture of support for the young generation of this place and strengthening the effort in the field of higher artistic education.

It is a visual arts event of national interest and glamour, an institution that does not simply function as an “exhibition event”, but as a framework for artistic, educational and curatorial experimentation. The Biennale will be dedicated to Irene Katsigra, daughter of the city’s benefactor George Katsigras, who passed away prematurely.

The event includes two separate events that have a common goal, the promotion and the highlighting of the new art scene, offering a platform to young visual artists.

The first and central exhibition event concerns the realization of an art exhibition of young creators of graduates of the Schools of Fine Arts in the area of the Gallery. The exhibition will be of a competitive nature where the 6 best entries will be awarded prizes. The Municipal Art Gallery of Larissa – Museum G. I. Katsigra, wishing to support young artists, will award three prizes and three commendations accompanied by a corresponding amount of money. The selection of the works will be made by an independent committee. The winning works will then become part of the Gallery’s Collection. The judging committee is composed of the directors of the three major museums of contemporary art in Greece, namely the director of the National Gallery-Alexandros Soutsos Museum, Mrs. Syrago Tsiara, the Director of the National Museum of Contemporary Art, Ms. Katerina Gregou and the Director of the MOMus Museum of Contemporary Art-Collections of the Macedonian Museum of Contemporary Art and the State Museum of Contemporary Art, Ms. Thouli Misirloglou.

The second is a workshop with two thematic modules. The first one has to do with art education in the country’s Higher Educational Institutions, aiming to explore contemporary practices and future challenges, and the second one with contemporary artistic creation, the perspectives of graduates of the Schools of Fine Arts, institutions, bodies, mechanisms of support and promotion of young creators.

The Biennale of the Schools of Fine Arts will be inaugurated at the Municipal Gallery of Larissa Museum G. I. Katsigra, on Saturday 2 December 2023 at 19.30 and the Workshop will take place on Sunday 3 December 2023, while the Exhibition will run until 31 December 2023.
