Since 1977, 18 May has been designated as International Museum Day. The objective of the anniversary remains constant and relevant: To highlight the role of museums in modern society; in order to enhance education, promote mutual understanding, peace, and cooperation among peoples".
Every year the museums welcome the public with free admission, music, events, and activities for young and old alike, with a program often not limited to 18 May but covering more days.
The Greek section of ICOM has selected the Basil and Elise Goulandris Foundation as the 2023 honored organization. For the 18th of May, the Museum has planned a series of special events with extended hours, special tours, educational programs, and music.
The Acropolis Museum celebrates European Museum Night on Saturday 13 May 2023, with extended opening hours from 9 am to midnight and free admission from 8 pm onwards. Visitors will be able to admire the masterpieces of its collections in the evening light. On Thursday 18 May 2023, the Museum will celebrate International Museum Day with free admission for visitors from 9 am to 8 pm. The Acropolis Museum has planned educational activities for children and parents.
The Municipality of Athens welcomes young and old to the Digital Museum of Platonos Academy, the Museum of Folk Art and Tradition; Angeliki Hadjimichali the Arts Centre and the Cultural Centre Melina; of the Municipality of Athens on Thursday 18 May to celebrate the International Museum Day 2023 with the central theme; Museums, sustainability and quality of life, through educational programmes and activities with free participation, implemented by the Culture, Sports and Youth Organization of the Municipality of Athens (OPANDA).
The Epigraphic Museum participates in the celebration of the International Museum Day by organizing guided tours on Thursday 18 May 2023: Jewish Inscriptions in Greece, ( by Anastasia Loudarou, archaeologist of the Jewish Museum of Greece), Therapeion Philotimos (by archaeologists of the Museum).
On the occasion of the celebration of the International Museum Day (18 May), the National Historical Museum (NHM) in cooperation with the Public Benefit Enterprise of the Municipality of Hydra (KEDY), organizes on the weekend of 13 and 14 May a handicraft workshop entitled; Open the trunks; at the Historical House of Lazaros Kountouriotis, a branch of the Museum (NHM) in Hydra.
The Museum of Science and Technology of the University of Patras celebrates the International Museum Day 2023 with a variety of events and activities starting from May 12th until the end of the month. The Museum’s original programs are based around this year's theme and are aimed at school groups, and younger and older visitors.
The Natural History Museum of the Petrified Forest of Lesvos participates in the celebration of the International Museum Day and on Thursday 18 May 2023 will welcome visitors to its premises in Sigri with free admission, giving everyone the opportunity to get to know the " Green Museum.
