The Ministry of Culture, through the Directorate of Letters, with resources from the Recovery Fund, participates with a National Booth in the 38th International Book Fair of Guadalajara, Mexico, which will be held from Saturday 30 November to Sunday 8 December 2024, with Spain as guest of honour.
It is the second time that Greece participates, with guests and a cultural programme, in the International Book Fair of Guadalajara (FIL Guadalajara 2024), the most important international meeting of the Spanish-speaking publishing world and the largest book fair in Latin America.
This year, around 35 publishers, cultural organizations and institutions, such as the Society of Authors, the Panhellenic Federation of Publishers and Booksellers, the Ioannis F. Costopoulos Foundation, the Hellenic Foundation for Book and Culture, the newly established organization of the Ministry of Culture, the international festivals LEA and ANALOGIO, and publications, in Greek and in other languages, of the Ministry of Culture and its supervised institutions will be presented, cultural institutions and publishing houses, both Greek and foreign, that publish translations of Greek books, as well as books published in other languages under the GreekLit platform funded by the Ministry of Culture.
The Cultural Events Programme of Greece at FIL 2024, which is being developed by the Ministry of Culture in cooperation with Greek and foreign publishers and cultural institutions, includes the following: Dimitris Georgopalis (cartoonist), Elizabeth Kotzia (journalist and literary critic), Konstantinos Koufalis (playwright), Christos Kythreotis (writer), Adriana Martínez (Director of the Greek-Biro-American Literature Festival LEA (Literature in Athens), Antonis Nikolopoulos (Soloup, political cartoonist and comic creator), Konstantinos Palaeologos (professor at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and translator), and Sissy Papathanasiou (Director of Letters at the Ministry of Culture).
The programme of cultural events in Greece, among other things, includes a presentation of the contemporary Greek publishing scene and its interactions with Spanish-speaking countries, a screening of a film based on a Greek literary work and a discussion on the opportunities and challenges of transferring books to cinema, a panel on the developments and social reflection of modern Greek drama, as well as on graphic humour and cartoons as a bridge of cultures and a tool for the promotion of literacy, etc. ά.
The Greek cultural events, apart from the exhibition venues, will also take place in other important landmarks of the city, such as the University Centre for Arts, Architecture and Design of the University of Guadalajara-Jalisco (CUADD), the University Cultural Centre, the Galería Jorge Martínez, etc.
