On Thursday 7 March 2024, the actions of the educational action of bird watching in the bioreserve of salt evaporation pond of Kalloni by the Natural History Museum of the Petrified Forest of Lesvos / Environmental Information Centre of Kalloni were completed. 50 students and three teachers of the 4th High School of Mytilene participated in the educational action.

The educational activity of bird watching was carried out under the guidance of the Biodiversity and Geodiversity Team of the Museum of Natural History of the Petrified Forest of Lesvos / Environmental Information Centre of Kalloni, Antonakis Manolis, Angelos Deligiannis, Vasiliki Kakambouras and Evita Tsonidou. The participants got to know the birdlife and plants of the wetland of Kalloni Salt evaporation pond.

The programme started from the observatory on the eastern side of the pond, where the importance of the wetlands of Lesvos was introduced, as well as the migration period that we are currently going through. Then the participants headed towards the middle of the salt evaporation pond following the perimeter dirt road.

During the walk the students learned about the value of the wetland of the pond as an ecosystem of the protected area and the importance of the flora and fauna of the area. They got to know the special characteristics of the interaction of living organisms and wetland plants such as the saltbush, rush and many other plant species of the wetland.

Finally, using special observation equipment (telescopes, individual binoculars), the team met a wide variety of birds, which are currently on the island of Lesvos.
