From the affluent neighborhoods of the 19th century to the poverty and industrial pollution-ridden neighborhoods of all kinds of war refugees and economic migrants, Piraeus is organized as a single city, despite the shocking contrasts that divide its society. This book attempts to offer an account of this Piraeus; about the port city whose construction began at the beginning of the 19th century on deserted, ancient ruins, it matured, reached its peak and went into decline on its way to the end of the 20th century.
