The University of Cyprus co-organizes lectures and public discussion in the context of an architecture exhibition.

As part of the architecture exhibition entitled Past-forward: Stavros Economou Unarchived, at the State Gallery of Contemporary Art – SPEL, the Department of Architecture of the University of Cyprus invites the public to lectures and public discussion on Friday, September 17, 2021 from 16:30-18:30 on “The Architectural Archive: Recording, Collection and Exhibition Practices”.

The lectures and the discussion will explore how architecture and its stories are recorded, depicted and exhibited. The architectural archive, unlike other collections, consists of representations (e.g. drawings, models, photographs, documents) of works (buildings), which communicate design processes and final implemented or non-implemented proposals. How does the nature of architectural representation affect the perception of a building and its history? What are the dominant narratives and how can a critical review of Modernism illuminate our understanding?

Buildings are transformed in time through habitation. They are often abandoned or demolished. What are the historiographical methods, creative design tools, and curatorial practices that allow us to reconstruct their past and envision their future? How can we develop other ways of producing and transferring knowledge?

The discussion will be moderated by Ms. Popi Iakovou, Lecturer at the Department of Architecture of the University of Cyprus.

Lecturers:

  • Associate Professor Panagiota Pyla, Department of Architecture, University of Cyprus: “Stories of the present: Critical repositionings of the Modern”
