Public Central Library of Serres

The Public Central Library of Serres was founded in 1952 and is one of the first public libraries operating in Greece. The original collection was created by donations from various institutions, such as the Ministry of Education, the National Library, the French Consulate, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, as well as individual donors and friends of the Library.


Initially, the Library was housed in private buildings in the city. Today, as an N.P.D.D., it is housed in a privately owned five-storey building on N. Nikolaou Street in the city centre. The five floors, with a total area of 3,200 sq.m., include: Reading Rooms, Adult Libraries, Lending Department, Periodicals and Newspapers Department, Public Information Centre, Children’s Library, Exhibition Areas, Amphitheatre with a capacity of 250 seats with the possibility of hosting events and film screenings.


The Public Central Library of Serres is a hive of culture and one of the largest libraries in the country, offering its services to a population of over 200,000 inhabitants. Its rich collection of over 100,000 volumes of printed and audiovisual material is constantly being enriched. Part of the collection has been digitised and is available in the digital repository. On the third floor is permanently hosted: a) the music archive of Mr. Giorgos Aggeioplastis, with rare photographic and printed material from the musical history of the town of Serres. ( and b) the archive of Mrs. Yvonne Hunt, with material from the folklore tradition of the prefecture of Serres. ( )



Digital and electronic services

On our new website  the electronic OPAC book search catalogue is available, ( ) to browse the library’s shelves virtually by subject.

The Library, as part of the project “Digitisation of Public Library Material”, implemented by the Ministry of National Education and Religious Affairs, has digitised a large part of its rare material. The digitised material is available to users on its website. ( )

The digitisation of the archive of local newspapers was recently completed and the material is available in the Library’s digital repository.    ( )

“The e-story chest”: a collection of digital narratives from local people, with the aim of preserving the unwritten local cultural heritage.   ( )

The HEAL-Link (Hellenic Association of Academic Libraries of Greece) Copy Service of Scientific Articles. ( )

Educational programmes

It implements reading programmes, with the participation of school units.               ( ) Active participation in the Network of Greek Libraries and in the summer reading and creativity campaign of the National Library of Greece. ( )


The Library’s publishing activity aims at publishing books of local content and interest. ( )


Interlibrary loan

The service of interlibrary loan of printed material with other libraries helps to better serve its members. ( )

Public Information Centre – Wifi

The Public Information Center is located on the second floor in a specially designed room with ten (10) computers, printer, scanner and free use of the internet. ( )

Services for People with Disabilities

On the second floor of the Library there is a specially equipped area for the support of persons with disabilities. ( )

Mobile Unit

The Public Central Library of Serres has a modern mobile library, which visits primary and secondary schools. ( )

The priority of the Management and Staff is to modernize and upgrade the services of our Library, not only to the local community, but also to the remote reading public.
