Public Central Library of Serres
The Public Central Library of Serres was founded in 1952 and is one of the first public libraries operating in Greece. The original collection was created by donations from various institutions, such as the Ministry of Education, the National Library, the French Consulate, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, as well as individual donors and friends of the Library.
Housing
Initially, the Library was housed in private buildings in the city. Today, as an N.P.D.D., it is housed in a privately owned five-storey building on N. Nikolaou Street in the city centre. The five floors, with a total area of 3,200 sq.m., include: Reading Rooms, Adult Libraries, Lending Department, Periodicals and Newspapers Department, Public Information Centre, Children’s Library, Exhibition Areas, Amphitheatre with a capacity of 250 seats with the possibility of hosting events and film screenings.
Collections
The Public Central Library of Serres is a hive of culture and one of the largest libraries in the country, offering its services to a population of over 200,000 inhabitants. Its rich collection of over 100,000 volumes of printed and audiovisual material is constantly being enriched. Part of the collection has been digitised and is available in the digital repository. On the third floor is permanently hosted: a) the music archive of Mr. Giorgos Aggeioplastis, with rare photographic and printed material from the musical history of the town of Serres. Digital and electronic services

The Library, as part of the project “Digitisation of Public Library Material”, implemented by the Ministry of National Education and Religious Affairs, has digitised a large part of its rare material.
