The annual grape harvest took place on Wednesday, September 2, 2026, at the Municipal Vineyard of the City of Thessaloniki, on Agios Dimitrios Street. Municipal employees and local volunteers participated in the harvest of the vineyard’s red grape varieties, Xinomavro and Agiorgitiko, following the earlier harvest of the white varieties, Malagouzia and Robola. This year’s production is expected to reach approximately 800 bottles.

As part of this year’s event, Thessaloniki Mayor Stelios Angeloudis honored Vangelis Gerovasiliou for his many years of support and contributions to the Thessaloniki Municipality’s Urban Vineyard, in the presence of the Deputy Mayor for the Environment, Urban Greenery and Wildlife, Vasilis Diamantakis.

Vangelis Gerovasiliou placed particular emphasis on the social aspect of the initiative, noting that this year’s production will also be donated to charitable causes.

The relationship between the Gerovassiliou Estate and the Municipal Vineyard dates back to its very beginnings. From the very first steps of the municipal vineyard, the Estate has voluntarily undertaken the processing of the grapes, the winemaking, and the bottling of the wine produced, actively contributing to the continuation and development of the project, which began approximately 13 years ago, during the mayoral term of Yiannis Boutaris, in collaboration with the School of Agriculture at Aristotle University of Thessaloniki.

During the grape harvest, the Mayor of Thessaloniki spoke about the people who consistently support the Municipal Vineyard, highlighting the contribution of the employees of the relevant municipal department and the local residents.

“We are here again for our annual gathering that marks the start of the grape harvest,” said Mr. Angeloudis, emphasizing that the Urban Vineyard is a prime example of how meaningful pockets of greenery and natural produce can be created within the urban fabric.
