The Department of Sound and Image Arts of the School of Music and Audiovisual Arts of the Ionian University announces the Postgraduate Programme (MSc) titled “Audiovisual Arts in the Digital Age” (Official Gazette 2936/20.07.2018, vol. B’ and Official Gazette 7372/31-01-2025, vol. B’) for the academic year 2026-2027, in accordance with Law 4485/2017. This MSc focuses on fostering and providing specialization in the creative field of new forms of artistic expression using exclusively digital media (digital arts / new media arts), as these are grounded in the creative background of traditional art forms (visual arts, printmaking, sculpture, as well as music / sound production), but differ and develop primarily and exclusively through the integration of the continuously evolving digital interactive and audiovisual technology.

The MSc leads to the award of a Master’s Diploma titled Audiovisual Arts in the Digital Age. The programme is full-time, and part-time study is not available for candidates seeking admission.

For the academic year 2026–2027, the maximum number of available postgraduate student positions in the MSc is 35.

About

The aim of the MSc is to advance scientific knowledge, research, and artistic creation in the interdisciplinary creative field of digital audiovisual art and communication / creative industry, through the use of contemporary interaction and audiovisual representation technologies, with emphasis on applying the relevant scientific thinking and on producing artistic work.

These opportunities are offered primarily to artists who have already demonstrated creative experience and artistic work using the traditional expressive means widely used in the field of Fine Arts, and who wish to specialise in the use of the new media provided by digital audiovisual technology and interaction technology, to transform their artistic identity so that:

a) it is defined in the form of an autonomous artistic work that falls within the field of digital art (and more specifically the art of sound, image, or their multimedia combination); or
b) it includes characteristics of activity in the fields of the creative economy and of audiovisual communication and the audiovisual industry.

Course of study

The total duration of study leading to the award of the Master’s Diploma is set at three (3) semesters. The programme of study includes six-month educational units (modules), which are distributed across the first two semesters of study, while in the third semester students carry out the Master’s Dissertation.

The educational units in the first two semesters are implemented through a combination of theoretical / laboratory teaching and the completion of individual or group assignments by the postgraduate students. In all cases, given the strongly applied and creative character of the programme, the above assignments correspond to at least 50% of the total educational workload of each respective educational unit. At the same time, postgraduate students participate in the Department’s annual Audiovisual Arts Festival (which takes place in May) as part of the educational process.

The examination method for each educational unit (written, oral, assignment(s)) is announced at the beginning of the respective semester.

The language of teaching is Greek. However, the writing of the Master’s Dissertations may also be done in English following the student’s choice in consultation with the supervising lecturer.

Attendance at the educational units is carried out either in-person (10% of the total teaching hours of the educational units or/and seminars) or remotely (90% of the total teaching hours of the educational units or/and seminars), depending on the needs of the postgraduate students. In the above cases, a special real-time tele-education platform is available. Specifically for the research component of the educational units, its implementation is carried out by the postgraduate students under the continuous supervision of the respective lecturers, who monitor progress during specific group or individual educational sessions (in-person or remotely).

It should be noted that, as the evolution of the current health crisis remains unclear, if new extraordinary measures are taken by the Ministry of Education to prevent the spread of the COVID-19 virus and remote education is imposed as a matter of necessity, the Department of Sound and Image Arts and, specifically, the MSc in Audiovisual Arts in the Digital Age, possesses the appropriate infrastructure and, in any case, will operate in accordance with the Ministry’s circulars and the legislation that will regulate the relevant matters.
