The completion of the restoration of the Parthenon’s west pediment and the permanent removal of the exterior scaffolding from the monument’s west facade mark a particularly significant milestone in the effort to protect and showcase the monuments of the Acropolis.
For the first time in approximately 220 years, the Ministry of Culture is restoring the west facade of the Parthenon to its fullest possible form, as the installation of two columns in the empty spaces of the west pediment and the completion of the restoration of the parapet wall have restored the architectural unity of the pediment.
The restoration of the drum’s uprights was one of the most complex projects undertaken in recent years by the Acropolis Monuments Conservation Service (AMCS). The project required specialized technical solutions and absolute precision at every stage of the process, from the preparation of the new marble blocks to their hoisting and installation on the monument.
The large pilaster of the western pediment was restored to its original geometry by bonding the surviving ancient fragments and filling in the gaps with new marble, while the second pilaster was constructed entirely from new marble. To facilitate the final installation of the stones, a new functional scaffolding system was installed, which meets the strictest modern safety standards and is aesthetically adapted to the monument.
