The Hellenic Parliament Foundation for Parliamentarism and Democracy is organizing a one-day conference titled “Dimitris N. Maronitis. The Modern Greek Dimension in His Work” on Friday, April 24, 2026, at 4:00 p.m. in the Hellenic Parliament’s event hall, 22-24 Amalias Street, entrance from Rallou Manou Square.
A professor in the broadest sense of the word, D.N. Maronitis (1929–2016) taught countless generations of Greeks what it means to have a passion for ancient and modern Greek literature, scientific reasoning, and political integrity. A tireless worker, he taught at Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, contributed to the establishment of the field of Modern Greek Philology, developed his own personal method for approaching literary texts, authored countless studies enriching Greek and international scholarship, translated the Homeric epics by adopting, for the first time, a poetic style free of rhyme, and for 47 years published journalistic columns, taking a stand on critical issues of intellectual and political current affairs.
In honor of an intellectual who, alongside his creative work, did not hesitate to confront the colonels’ junta and was held for many months in the detention centers of the EAT-ESA, the Hellenic Parliament Foundation for Parliamentarism and Democracy is organizing a conference featuring speeches and a roundtable discussion, as well as a screening of the short documentary produced and directed by Maria Danezi titled Black Serenity: Settling the Longing of the Self.
Admission is free to the public upon presentation of a police ID.
