On Wednesday, April 22, at 6:30 p.m., at Ypsilon (5 Edessis Street), the Friends of the “Nikos Poulantzas” Institute are hosting an open meeting and discussion titled:

“The Middle East: In the Eye of the Storm of War and the New Geopolitical Order”

Operation “Epic Fury” follows the genocide of Palestinians in Gaza and is a strategic choice by the Trump and Netanyahu administrations. The inconsistencies in the official justifications of the U.S. and Israel for the outbreak of hostilities demonstrate that the actual goal is to shape a new geopolitical order, as well as to alter the regional balance of power among the major powers.

Why has the Middle East been in a constant state of turmoil for over a century and is unable (or not allowed) to find a balance?

Why are international rules interpreted and applied selectively? How does the structural crisis of the international legal order affect this?

Why have the concepts of “liberation” and “self-defense”—in an environment where everyone invokes the “rights of peoples”—become empty rhetoric?

The meeting will seek to understand and address these questions through data and perspectives that the speakers will present:

  • Marina Eleftheriadou, Assistant Professor of International Relations and Contemporary International Politics, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki
  • Lois Lambrianidis, Executive Director of Panteion University, Professor Emeritus at the University of Macedonia, former Secretary General for Investment at the Ministry of Economy and Development
  • Despoina Sinou, Assistant Professor of International Law, Associate Dean of the School of Law, Political and Social Sciences, Sorbonne Paris Nord University
  • Konstantinos Tsitselikis, Professor of International Law, University of Macedonia

The discussion will be moderated by Tania Mitropoulou, a master’s candidate in political science.
