Hellenic Survey of Geology and Mineral Exploration
The history of the country’s modern geological institution began in 1919 with the establishment of the Geological Survey, an agency tasked with promoting geological and mineral exploration in Greece. In 2019, after a century of continuous operation—though under various organizational forms and names, most recently as IGME — the Geological Survey was transformed into the newly established Hellenic Survey of Geology and Mineral Exploration (HSGME.), which continues its work with a modern structure and an expanded role.

Today, all of HSGME’s services and activities are housed in a building complex with a total area of 18,000 square meters in the Olympic Village, which includes common areas, office and laboratory wings, a modern amphitheater, seminar rooms, and a fully equipped library, while its work is supported by the six Regional Units of HSGME throughout the country.
Since 2021, the National Geological Museum of Greece has been operating on the premises, with a mission to highlight the country’s geological cultural heritage and to share the important scientific work of the HSGME with the general public.

National Geological Museum of Greece
The museum has been designed according to the most modern museological and exhibition design approaches, with the aim of sparking genuine interest among visitors. Through careful lighting, modern display cases, and the highlighting of the minerals’ colors and shapes, it offers a unique touring experience. Its thirteen collections showcase Greece’s rich mineralogical treasure and highlight its close connection to the country’s ancient and modern history.
The public has a rare opportunity to see precious and semi-precious stones, rocks, and other minerals in their natural form, exactly as they are found underground—a far cry from the processed images by which they are usually known.

Among the museum’s most impressive exhibition spaces, the hall of fluorescent minerals and rocks stands out, a space that utilizes specialized ultraviolet (UV) lighting to highlight the unique optical properties of specific minerals.
Under controlled lighting conditions, these minerals emit striking colors—ranging from vivid green and blue to fiery orange, red, and purple—creating an almost “magical” experience for visitors.

Εθνικό Γεωλογικό Μουσείο
It is one of the few exhibition spaces in Europe where visitors can explore such an extensive and unique collection of fluorescent minerals and rocks, a feature that makes the National Geological Museum one of a kind in Greece.
Every year, thousands of children, families, school groups, and visitors from across the country participate in educational programs and guided tours led by specialized staff, gaining hands-on experience with the world of geosciences.
