The Hellenic Parliament Foundation for Parliamentarism and Democracy, as part of its “Special Features” series, is organizing an event on the life and work of Nikolaos Gazis on Tuesday, March 31, 2026, at 7:00 p.m. in the Hellenic Parliament’s event hall, 22-24 Amalias Street, entrance on Rallou Manou Square.

Nikolaos Gazis (1903–1996) studied law at the universities of Athens, Paris, and New York. He was a member of the Greek delegation to the San Francisco Conference (1945) for the establishment of the United Nations (UN). He served on the negotiating committee for Greece’s Association Agreement with the European Economic Community (1961), as well as the negotiating teams that concluded the settlement of the country’s public debt, thanks to which Greece fully rejoined the international economic system (1962–1964).

He served as legal counsel and, from 1964, as deputy governor of the National Bank of Greece. He was elected to the Hellenic Parliament with the Center Union–New Forces party and served on the Constitutional Committee in 1975, which drafted the country’s Constitution. He was also elected to the European Parliament with PASOK in 1984, and during his term, until 1989, he served as Vice-Chair of the European Parliament’s Committee on Legal Affairs. Despoina-Georgia Konstantinakou, Ph.D. in Modern and Contemporary History at the Department of Educational Programs of the Hellenic Parliament Foundation for Parliamentarism and Democracy

Akritas Kaidatzis, Associate Professor at the Law School of Aristotle University of Thessaloniki

The event will be moderated by Panagiotis K. Tsoukas, State Councilor and former president of the Association of Judicial Officers of the Council of State Admission is free to the public upon presentation of a police ID.
