Professor Emeritus of the Law School of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, Member of the European Academy of Sciences and Arts, and President of the Institute of European and International Criminal Law, Christos Mylonopoulos, will be awarded an Honorary Doctorate from the Faculty of Social Sciences and Education of the University of Cyprus on Wednesday, January 21, 2026. He is a distinguished scientist with a prolific presence and multifaceted contribution to Legal Science and Education.

The ceremony will include an address by the Rector of the University of Cyprus, Professor Tassos Christofides, and a presentation of the honoree’s work, contributions, and personality by Professor Charalambos Papacharalambous of the Department of Law. During the ceremony, the Resolution will be read by the Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences and Education, Professor Antonis Ellinas, and the honoree will be presented with the University of Cyprus gown by the Rector. The distinguished professor of Criminal Law will give a speech entitled “The concept of omission in international criminal law.”

Mr. Mylonopoulos graduated first in his class from the Athens Law School (1977) and completed his doctoral thesis at the University of Saarbrücken with a DAAD scholarship, which was honored with the Eduard Martin Award. He served as Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, and then Professor at the Law School of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, while conducting significant research at leading institutions (Munich, Max Planck Freiburg) with funding from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation.

It is noteworthy that in 1987 he introduced the teaching of international criminal law at the University of Athens, taught as a visiting professor at major European universities, and gave lectures internationally. His work has had a wide international impact and has been translated into many languages. He has served as chairman or member of important legislative committees (including for the Penal Code), member of supreme judicial and scientific bodies, and representative of the country in European institutions.

In 2015, he founded and became president of the Institute of European and International Criminal Law, while in 2012 he was elected a member of the European Academy of Sciences and Arts and in 2023 a member of the Academic Advisory Board.
