Every day until December 21, you can visit Alexander Tzannis’ exhibition Athens Dies In Dreams At Sunrise for the NEON City Project 2025 at the old quarry on Filopappou Hill.
A parasitic sculpture encircles and inhabits the perforated open structure located in the old quarry on Filopappou Hill. This structure, designed by architects Bouki Babalou and Antonis Noukakis in 2003, although never used for its original purpose, to host outdoor sculpture exhibitions, remains anchored to the rock as a silent imprint of that intention. Tzannis’ sculpture is attached to it, restoring the original intention. The sculpture depicts parts of the branches of the plant scattered on the hill, ‘translated’ into iron through the design of three-dimensional models and industrial production processes. This plant, the vetch, looks dry but is not, falling into autumn dormancy and growing again when favorable conditions return. It recalls the cycle of life passing through death. At the base of the sculpture, sunken sports shirts can be seen, a sartorial reference to rave culture and the parties of the 1990s. Some took place on Filopappou Hill. The clothes, frozen in a frame that looks fluid but has solidified, echo this culture.
