The Mount Athos Center is organizing, as part of its 25th anniversary celebrations, the 12th International Scientific Conference on the theme “Mount Athos and Thessaloniki through the Centuries,” from December 4 to 7, 2025, at the “Stefanos Dragoumis” amphitheater of the Museum of Byzantine Culture.
As the Scientific Committee notes: “The aim of the scientific contributions to the Conference is to shed light on some of the most important aspects that define the subject of Mount Athos – Thessaloniki. Indicatively, an attempt will be made to highlight the relations of Mount Athos with the secular and ecclesiastical authorities of Thessaloniki over time, as well as with the society, economy, and trade of the city. Theological movements, hagiological relevance, and interactions in the architecture and art of Mount Athos and Thessaloniki will also be explored. In order to highlight the deep spiritual ties between the two places, the conference will begin with a round table discussion on the emblematic figure of Saint Gregory Palamas and his relationship with Mount Athos.

As part of the conference, a facsimile reprint of the rare work Mount Athos and Its Monasteries (1924) by British archaeologist, historian, and researcher at the British School at Athens Frederick William Hasluck (1878–1920) was presented. The book is the ninth edition in the “Athonika Analechta” series published by the Mount Athos Society, with an introduction by Athanasios Semoglou, Professor of Byzantine Archaeology and Art at the Department of History and Archaeology of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki.
The conference will be broadcasted live through https://tinyurl.com/4pauve5z.
Certificates of Participation will be awarded on condition of four days’ attendance at the conference.
During the conference, publications by Agioritiki Estia will be on sale in the foyer of the amphitheater at a 50% discount.
