The Museum of the Macedonian Struggle and Modern History of Macedonia Foundationand the Hellenic Parliament Foundation for Parliamentarism and Democracy, on the occasion of the publication of the results of the two Foundations’ two-year research program in the form of a collective volume, are honored to invite you to a scientific conference on the topic:

“Macedonia in the Greek Parliament, 1897-1989”

on Monday, October 13, 2025, at 9:00 a.m.

to be held at the Law School, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (Room 212, 2nd floor)

Macedonia was often a topic of discussion in Greek public discourse and politics during the 20th century. As a region with distinct characteristics and problems, it often required a different—if not special—approach from the national center, making its situation unique and distinct, requiring special handling and careful management. This – well-intentioned – “peculiarity” of the region is reflected in parliamentary speeches and interventions throughout the last century.

The debate on Macedonia was conducted through all kinds of publications and in the press, but its focus was the Greek Parliament. Through the statements of MPs and ministers, especially those who, after 1912, represented the Macedonian electoral districts, highlight the changing significance of Macedonia as a symbol and the ways in which its image and problems as a Greek province were managed, depending on the particular political needs and discourse of each era.

Based on the above, the two institutions, with the participation of trainee historians, proceeded with the publication of the collective volume Macedonia in the Greek Parliament, 1897-1989, edited by Professor of History at the Department of History and Archaeology of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Mr. Vasilis Gounaris, and Professor of Diplomatic History at the Law School of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Mr. Ioannis Stefanidis.
