The Greek Film Festival in Australia, which celebrates its 30th anniversary this year and will take place from October 14 to 26, opens its doors with the powerful historical drama Kapetan Michalis by Nikos Kazantzakis, directed by Costas Charalambous.

The premiere will take place on Tuesday, October 14, at the Festival’s opening ceremony at the iconic Astor Theatre, and the film will also be screened at special cinema events at Palace Balwyn Cinema, Palace Cinema Como, and Palace Pentridge Cinema.

The work tells the story of Crete in 1889, in the midst of the revolution against the Ottomans. Through the story of Captain Michalis, Nikos Kazantzakis unfolds the story of a Cretan fighter, torn between his duty to liberate his homeland and a forbidden love. With freedom, passion, and identity as its central themes, this epic production brings to life the legendary hero of Kazantzakis’ masterpiece—a fearless warrior who vowed to remain dressed in black until his island was liberated.

The Greek Film Festival was created by film enthusiasts in Melbourne and Sydney with the aim of promoting the rapidly growing Greek film industry, and this year celebrates its 30th anniversary. The screenings take place at the Palace cinema chain, while similar festivals are organized by the Greek communities of Sydney, Brisbane, Adelaide, and Canberra.

The celebration of the 30th anniversary will continue throughout the festival with other events. For more information: www.greekfilmefestival.com.au
