Description
The Postgraduate Programme (MSc) “History and Philosophy of Science and Technology” is an interdisciplinary subject that is taught at leading universities around the world. It studies Science as a complex historical, social and cultural phenomenon and highlights the philosophical dimensions of theories and scientific practice. It examines the historical and philosophical approaches to science in general, the individual sciences (natural sciences, humanities, social sciences, life sciences) and technology. It enhances philosophical thinking in these areas; explores the role of science and technology in human societies past, present and future. It leads to the ability to form responsible opinions on research and technology policy.
It is the only program in Greece that studies in depth the correlations between Natural and Human Sciences and Technology, thus cultivating and promoting a new kind of humanism, in line with international academic developments in the 21st century.
The Postgraduate Programme is organised by the Department of History and Philosophy of Science, internationally recognised for the high quality of the research work of its professors, as reflected in all international research engines (Scopus, GoogleScholar, WebofScience, etc.).
The curriculum has been accredited by the National Authority for Higher Education as fully compliant with the principles of the quality standard for the accreditation of Postgraduate Programmes and quality assurance in the European Higher Education Area.
The duration of study is set at four (4) academic semesters, corresponding to one hundred and twenty (120) credit units (ECTS).The Programme is open to graduates of universities of higher education in Greece or recognised institutions abroad, as well as graduates of universities of applied sciences of a related subject.
The Department of History and Philosophy of Science awards an annual prize of 1,000 Euros in memory of the outstanding collaborator of the Department, Vana Grigoropoulou, for the best postgraduate thesis written during the previous academic year.
Graduates of the programme meet all the requirements for continuing at doctoral level. Students are also given the opportunity to participate in national or international funded research projects.
Successful candidates join an active community of postgraduate students and doctoral candidates. The Department of History and Philosophy of Science organizes every two years the Panhellenic Conference on Philosophy of Science with international participation, which usually exceeds 60% of the participants.
