Description

The modern era is characterised by rapid economic and technological development, rapid population growth and movement, and increasing urbanisation, conditions which imply increased demand for raw materials and energy resources, increased construction activity, general environmental stress and increased exposure to natural and technological hazards.

The MSc “Earth and Environmental Sciences” by the Department of Geology and Geoenvironment of the NKUA aims to meet the modern demands for the production of qualified scientific personnel who will be able to successfully deal with the complexity of the problems arising in any modern field of activity related to Earth Sciences and the environment.

In order to contribute to the above-mentioned conditions and problems, the MSc “Earth and Environmental Sciences” offers a Diploma of Postgraduate Studies in the following specialisations

  1. “Applied Geology-Geophysics” focuses on the practical aspects of geophysics/seismology and geodynamic/tectonic geology. It aims to meet the increasing demands of both the public and private sectors for research into natural and energy resources, the study and measurement of natural and man-made disasters, the design and construction of projects, and the preparation of engineering, hydrogeological and environmental studies, among others.
  2. “Mineral Resources – Petrology and Environmental Management” focuses on the understanding of the properties of geological materials and the study of mineral resources, both raw materials and energy. It also examines the impact of chemical contaminants on the natural and man-made environment and strategies for addressing and managing related issues.
  3. “Climatic Variations and Impact on the Environment”, which is an interdisciplinary approach to the study and restoration of the modern environment through the training of scientists in issues related to the study and management of the impacts of rapid global climate change/climate crisis on the climate system and the use of new technologies and innovative research methods for the analysis of the climate system, such as Geographic Information Systems, satellite image analysis, mathematical processing of data, and the development of new technologies and methods for the analysis of the climate system.

The MSc in Earth and Environmental Sciences has a strong research orientation, as evidenced by the high number of ECTS credits allocated to research for the Master’s thesis. As a result, many graduates go on to pursue doctoral studies either in Greece or in universities abroad. Employment sectors include the civil service, NGOs, research institutions, environmental consultancies, energy and utilities, the oil and gas industry, mining, urban planning, water management, waste management and recycling, international organisations, and meteorology and climate change related sciences.

The MSc in Earth and Environmental Sciences admits 45 graduates from departments of Earth Sciences in Greece or equivalent recognised departments abroad. Graduates from other departments of other Universities with relevant specialisation may also participate. Examples of such graduates include physicists, chemists, oceanographers, biologists, geographers, archaeologists, surveyors, civil engineers, mining engineers, environmental engineers and agricultural engineers.

Duration of studies: four (4) academic semesters.

Tuition fees: 2,400 euros.
