The Residency is aimed at artists seeking to develop their artistic practice in a professional context, through projects involving experimentation, research and/or critical theory. Candidates may work with any medium, but must have developed at least three years of professional practice and have participated in several exhibitions.
The residency is especially aimed at emerging artists and those who, with an established professional trajectory, are interested in reorienting their creative process or carry out research or a new project in a different line than previous works.
The selected resident will have their travel, insurance and accommodation covered, as well as a stipend amounting to 850 €/month to cover their basic needs.
Applications that do not adhere to the above guidelines/formats/word counts will not be considered. Multiple applications are not accepted.
To submit your application, a Google account is required.
CONTENTS OF THE PROGRAMME
a. Every week, group meetings and studio visits are held with the mentors of the programme – established artists Simon Thompson, Sylvie Eyberg – and the Residency Coordinator, Eva Gorsse. These visits bring the artists together to show and assess the progress of their work on a regular basis, to establish an in-depth dialogue, and to confront divergent points of view.
b. Other guests (artists, curators, critics) are occasionally invited to meet the residents in their studios and discuss their work.
c. Field trips are organised mainly within Belgium, but also in major art cities in the surrounding countries, such as Cologne, Düsseldorf, Amsterdam, Rotterdam or Paris, where the residents can visit exhibitions, collections, and meet with other artists and cultural producers.
d. A public programme called Open School is organised towards the mid/end of the residency session during which the artists are invited to present their work and research matter to a varied audience, incl. art professionals, in an open, interactive and performative atmosphere.
e. Residents are encouraged to participate in all the complementary activities of WIELS, including lectures, screenings and discussions with relevant actors of the international contemporary art scene.
f. Artists have the possibility to return to WIELS sometime after their residency to present their work in the WIELS’ AFFILIATE space, or other agreed premises, in an aim to consolidate the links with the institution and to provide visibility of the outcomes derived from the creative processes initiated or developed during the time of their residency.
g. An online archive presents the artists’ work: https://www.wiels.org/en/residencies
