The Research Unit for Medieval Arts and Rituals (EMOMET) of the University of Cyprus and the research group “Byzantium and the Euro-Mediterranean Cultures of War” of the University of Mainz, Germany, co-organize an international conference entitled “Rituals of War in Byzantium, the Islamic World and the Latin West”.

This conference explores medieval war rituals in a variety of cultural contexts. It focuses on different practices and addresses questions such as: what form did war rituals take, how did they change over time and how were they structured as narrative constructions? How did soldiers behave in the context of a battle? Who decided which ritual practices would be performed at different times: before the war, during the war and at the end of the war (in the context of victory or defeat)? How were war rituals used in shaping a culture’s self-image?

The conference’s emphasis on East and West offers the opportunity to explore comparatively specific features of the various medieval war cultures: the Byzantine, the Islamic and the Latin. Moreover, the conference is characterized by its strong interdisciplinarity, with papers falling within the fields of history, archaeology, art history, and literature.

The conference will take place between 13-15 February 2025 at the University of Cyprus, in the “Ioannis Taifakos” hall (A106), 75 Kallipolios Street, Nicosia 1678.
