2023 Eleusis  European Capital of Culture supports the multimedia exhibition titled Fabrikage, organized by Cultterra youth group from 2 to 30 November at the Old Town Hall of Elefsina. Fabrikage is the result of a collaboration between artists and art workers from the three 2023 European Capitals of Culture– Elefsina, Veszprém, and Timișoara. In an effort to uncover common ground among the geographic elements and histories of these cities, they found something that had been present from the start: the industry that shaped the cities, ecosystems, and surrounding societies.

The decaying monolithic buildings, the grey walls, the broken windows, the kilns, are traces in the urban fabric that are rarely seen, but at the same time tend to look familiar in Romania, Hungary and Greece, as well as in other similar regions. The industries in these countries formed locally shared characteristics as they developed around the second half of the 19th century, creating towns and communities around them and expressing the labour identities and social narratives of their time. From the early 1990s to the present day, the once vibrant areas have begun to decline and de-populate and today their future remains uncertain.

The aim of the exhibition is to propose new ways of viewing the industrial heritage and history of local communities, while at the same time exploring ways of revitalising these areas through art and culture. The four artworks are presented in chronological order from the 1960s to 2024.
