Open Plan, the popular series of creative workshops of the Athens Epidaurus Festival, held during the autumn and winter months, returns this year for the fourth consecutive year!
Established for the valuable opportunity it gives to the public to get in touch with a wide range of craft and artistic practices and recognized professionals from different fields, this year Open Plan remains faithful to Fashion, Ceramics and Dance, but also invites us to discover the magical universe of Paper and its special arts and techniques.
With a firm focus on the connection between contemporary artistic creation and Ancient Drama, this year we are inspired by Dionysus and Apollo, archetypal figures that express the whirlwind of contrasts in the sources of artistic creation. In Phoebus and Bacchus, Nietzsche identifies the formidable countervailing forces that lead to the birth of tragedy. On the one hand, Apollonian harmony, measure, reason and the beauty of the dream; on the other hand, Dionysian intoxication, ecstasy and instinctive delirium. Can the artistic process be understood without the conflict and the inseparable relationship between order and anarchy, method and freedom, structure and spontaneity?
Drawing inspiration from the brilliant and powerful divine duo of Dionysus and Apollo, which we meet in inexhaustible mythological episodes and endlessly in Ancient Drama, the Open Plan workshops invite us to release our imagination and discover the intensity and joy of creation in unexpected expressive areas. The platform includes the Morphés triptych (Fashion, Ceramics and Paper Arts) and the dance education programme for teenagers Ancient Future: Dionysus meets Apollo.
The theatrical accompaniment of the workshops is undertaken by Elli Gavriel, a graduate of the Department of Theatre Studies of the University of Athens.
Participation in Open Plan actions is free of charge.
