In a series of actions and commemorative events, the Historical Museum of Crete commemorated the 83rd anniversary of the Battle of Crete.

Memorhy Points

Six informative signs about the Battle of Heraklion (20-29 May 1941) are placed at central points of the city which are related to the dramatic events of May ’41, at the place where Major Tzoulakis fell dead on the street of the same name, at the Lions, at the beginning of 1866 Street, at the junction of Dikeosynis and Evans Streets, at St. Demetrios Square and at 18 Englishmen Square. This is an initiative of the Mayor of Heraklion himself, Mr. Alexis Kalokairinos and Chairman of the Board of the Society of Cretan Historical Studies, organized by the Municipality of Heraklion and the Historical Museum of Crete, entitled “Memory Points”. Each column includes historical documentation and information material in the form of short texts and visual evidence, as well as a link (QR code) to more extensive photographic material and texts on the website of the Municipality of Heraklion. The installation took place on 25/5 and the official presentation on 26/5.

History on the Microphone

In collaboration with the Radio Station of the Archdiocese of Crete, a series of broadcasts entitled History on Microphone begins. In the first broadcast, which will be posted on the website of the Archdiocese of Crete and the Historical Museum of Crete in the near future, the author Mrs. Claire Mitsotaki, Vice-Chairman of the Board of Directors of the EKIM., reads Reg Spurr’s “Having and Losing” (2005, published by the EKIM Testimonies Series), with the author recording his memories of his participation in the Battle of Crete.

Book Presentations

► On 15 June, at the Historical Museum of Crete, Theodore Daskarolis is scheduled to present his books “Kourouvaaka or the Battle of Crete in the Antipodes and Other Stories” (2023, TO RODAKIO publications) and Peter Monteath’s “The Battle of 42nd Street” (2024, Contemporary Greek History Series, Historical Quest publications).

► On 25 June, the Historical Museum of Crete co-organises with the Cultural and Conference Centre of Heraklion the presentation of Menelaos Charalambides’ book “The Collaborationists” (2023, Alexandria Publications) at the PSKH.
