On the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the Asia Minor Catastrophe, the University of Patras is organizing a two-day international scientific conference, aiming to highlight known and unknown aspects of one of the most traumatic milestones in the Greek history of the 20th century and to familiarize the public of the region with the most modern scientific approaches to this event, which continues to have a weighty place and importance in the collective memory of the Greeks. The conference will be held on 14 and 15 October 2022 at the Conference Centre of the University of Patras, with the participation of leading experts from Greece and abroad and with free admission for the public. The speakers will address, among other things, the political, military and diplomatic aspects of the Asia Minor Campaign, the international environment in which the events took place, the economic framework of the era, the treatment of the refugee issue, as well as issues of historiography and memory. Special workshops for students are also planned, under the responsibility of the members of the Board of Directors of the Group for Historical Education in Greece (OIEE). The Conference is organized by the University of Patras, with the support of the International Society for First World War Studies (International Society for First World War Studies) and the ELKE of the University.
