THE ECCLESIASTICAL COMPOSITIONS OF MIKIS THEODORAKIS
A lesser known but particularly characteristic aspect of Mikis Theodorakis, that of the composer of sacred music, is illuminated by the theologian and musician Panagiotis Ant. Andriopoulos, at the event entitled The Ecclesiastical Compositions of Miki Theodorakis, which will be organized on Monday, February 21, 2022, at 7 p.m., by the Lillian Voudouri Music Library of the Friends of Music Association at the Athens Concert Hall.
One of Mikis Theodorakis’ earliest, widely known compositions is the famous Troparion of Cassiani, which he himself, as a teenager, performed in a church in Tripoli in 1942. This was the beginning of his compositional career, which, in its long course, includes works of ecclesiastical content, such as the Divine Liturgy of John Chrysostom and the Requiem for the Departed, as well as works in which he included hymns of the Church, such as the Friday Prayers in Symphony No. 3.
Panagiotis Ant. Andriopoulos presents the entire relevant oeuvre and explores the strong presence of the Byzantine part in other compositions of his, such as the famous Axion esti.
The lecture is accompanied by audiovisual material, which is also from the Mikis Theodorakis Archive, which is kept in the Music Library “Lillian Voudouri” of the Association “The Friends of Music”.
After the lecture, Miki Theodorakis’ church compositions will be presented for the first time in a transcription for voice and piano. The transcription was made especially for this event by the composer Theodora Mangina.
These are the composer’s youthful works:
Hymn to God (1942)
Paradise – The Monologue of Adam (1942)
Evensong – An arrangement of the second part of L.V. Beethoven’s Sextet op. 81b with the addition of “In praise of you” (1948)
